Richmond AFL legend turned TV commentator Matthew “Richo” Richardson (pictured above) and rising Fremantle Dockers star Sam Switkowski have again thrown their support behind our annual Be Wise Walk.
The two high-profile personalities have appealed to followers on social media to join in the major fundraiser, with the countdown now on to widespread “virtual events” across the country next month.
Richo – who describes himself as a “proud ambassador” for the Foundation has taken the time to produce this video, which we’ve shared on Facebook, while Sam is highlighting the cause here on his Instagram bio.
Both have been keen advocates for the Foundation since its inception and we’re thrilled to have their assistance in spreading our message.
Looking forward to highlighting Pat’s story
Sam, 24, (above) became firm friends with Pat when they were teammates in a premiership football side at Research Juniors in 2016, and is personally committed to telling his story.
“All the guys from that premiership team, which was skippered by Pat, still have a unique bond. I clearly remember the moment I found out that Pat was in hospital and on life support,” he said.
“I was on my way to a game in Melbourne when I saw the news on my phone. It was a weird, surreal feeling and our emotions were running high – we all had our fingers crossed hoping for the best over those hours.
“Up until then I had never really considered the effect that just one punch could have on so many lives, and the incident with Pat puts it all into perspective.
“I now see my role as telling Pat’s story. People often don’t fully appreciate the consequences of violence.
“When I hear people talking about one-punch attacks and they see it as amusing, it’s time to call it out – however difficult that conversation may be.”
For the third year running, Sam will be hosting a private 8-kilometre walk along the banks of Perth’s Swan River. The event – which has previously between 20 and 35 people – will take place on Saturday, November 20.
Deadline looming for registration
The combined distance covered by all registered walks between November 15 and 21 is currently sitting at an incredible 5,215 kilometres – but we still have some way to go to reach our target of 16,000 kilometres.
That figure is significant as it represents the distance from Melbourne to Imperia in Italy, where Pat spent some time in Year 11.
Everyone is welcome to join in, with the funds helping us continue our delivery of valuable Be Wise educational programs in schools and sports organisations.
